![]() The Watch, of course, has more leaders than Vimes and Carrot. They learn to work together Carrot reminds Vimes why he became a policeman in the first place, and Vimes grounds Carrot to adjust to the city’s morally grey area. ![]() Vimes decides to take charge before Carrot gets in trouble arresting the Thieves Guild, and when a dragon attempts to usurp Patrician Vetinari, the leader of the city. He planned for Carrot Ironfoundersson, a human foundling raised by dwarves, to enter the city, rescue the citizens from the dragon, and take over the story. My favourites are probably Night Watch, Carpe Jugulum and Small Gods - but I'd hold off on the first two until you've read the earlier Witches and Watch books.Terry Pratchett didn’t expect Sam Vimes to rise to the occasion. I'm a personal fan of recommending reading them in publication order, but I believe you should at last read each sub-series (Witches, Death, Guards etc) in order, so that you can pick up on the character and political development as the series progresses. For example in Mort did you notice that the Sto Helit family motto "Non Timetus Messor" translates as the rock song title "Don't Fear the Reaper"? and that "Sto Lat" is a Polish drinking song? Terry's work is so densely packed with references, jokes and allusions that it doesn't matter if you miss some on the first read - there will be all the more to pick up on the next read through. I can guarantee that you missed some points and jokes. There's no great overarching plot thread. Terry intended that you could pick up any one and not feel lost.
